Saltverk Review 2026: Icelandic Flake Salt Made With Geothermal Heat

The steak has rested, the knife slides through, and there's one last step before it goes to the table: a pinch of big, pyramid-shaped flakes that crackle between your fingers and shatter on the meat. That crunch, and the clean briny hit that follows, is what Saltverk sells. It's flaky sea salt made from Arctic seawater in a remote corner of Iceland, using heat from the ground instead of a gas burner.
We went through Saltverk's salts, gift boxes, prices and policies in October 2026. Here's how each flavour tastes according to the brand, what to sprinkle it on, and how to pay less for your jar.
The Story: Reviving a Saltworks From the 1700s
Saltverk says salt was first made with geothermal heat at Reykjanes, in Iceland's Westfjords, in the 18th century, when the Danish king set up production there. The saltworks fell silent for about two centuries. In 2011, founder Bjorn Steinar rebuilt it, and the team says it designed and welded much of the equipment itself. Saltverk has been making salt there ever since.
The location is the point. The brand describes Reykjanes as a remote fjord far from industry and shipping lanes, with whales, seals, birds and still-active hot springs. Those springs supply the 206°F (93°C) water that powers the whole process.
What Makes It Different: Two Ingredients, No Fire
Saltverk's own phrase is "Arctic seawater and geothermal heat. That is the whole recipe." Here's how the brand describes the rest:
- 100% geothermal energy. Seawater is pumped into open pans and heated with hot spring water until it becomes a strong brine (17–20% salinity), then boiled until crystals form. Saltverk says no gas or oil is burned, and the whole business has been Climate Neutral Certified through the Change Climate Project since 2024.
- Lifted by hand. The flakes are lifted out of the brine by hand, then drained and dried one pan at a time.
- Nothing added. No anti-caking agents, no additives, no iodine. The Flaky Sea Salt is kosher certified.
- A big, crisp flake. The pyramid shape dissolves fast on the tongue. Saltverk says that means you use less salt for more flavour, so a little pinch goes a long way.
- Keeps for years. Pure flake salt keeps indefinitely, and the flavoured salts hold their quality for five years. A jar never really goes off. It just runs out.

Where to start: the Sample Tins
The Try All Six Sample Tins set ($39.99) has one 10 g slide tin of each salt. Saltverk says that's enough for two or three weeks of finishing, about how long it takes to find the one you reach for without thinking. Its own starter guide: Flaky on eggs or steak, Birch Smoked on roast vegetables, Arctic Thyme on lamb, Seaweed on cod, Lava in herb butter, Licorice on dark chocolate. Buy this if you're curious but can't pick just one.
Already hooked? Get the refill pouch
The Flaky Sea Salt Refill Pouch holds 170 g (6 oz), which Saltverk calls "nearly two jars' worth," at a lower price per gram. It was $18.99 (marked down from $24.59) when we checked. Pour it into your old jar or a salt cellar. Buy this if you already own a jar and go through it fast.
