Grandy Organics Review 2026: Maine-Made Granola Baked in a Solar-Powered Bakery

It's 7 a.m., the coffee is still dripping, and you tip a bag over a bowl. Out tumble toasted coconut chips, cashews, pecans and pumpkin seeds, glazed with coconut nectar and a little maple syrup. No oats at all. Just a loud, golden crunch that sounds good before it even tastes good. That's Original Coconola, the grain-free granola that Grandy Organics bakes in small batches in a solar-powered bakery in Hiram, Maine.

We went through Grandy's granolas, trail mixes, roasted cashews, bulk bags, prices and policies in October 2026. Here's what's on the shelf, which bag suits which breakfast, and how to pay less per ounce.

The Story: A Campfire Idea From 1979

Grandy's "Life in Maine" page tells it simply: in 1979 a couple of friends tossed around the idea of making granola around a campfire in Baxter State Park. That idea became GrandyOats, and the recipe that started it all is still on sale today as Classic Granola, an oat granola with pumpkin seeds, walnuts and cashews, lightly sweetened with wildflower honey.

The brand now says its products are sold in over 6,000 doors nationwide, and the range has grown into grain-free "Coconola," trail mixes and seasoned organic nuts. The bakery itself sits on the Saco River, and the team describes itself as proud members of Maine Outdoor Brands and partners of the AMC. In short: a Maine company that still bakes in Maine.

What Makes It Different: Organic, Small-Batch and Sun-Powered

Plenty of granola is organic. Fewer bags come from a bakery that runs on its own solar field. According to Grandy's bakery page, the company installed 288 solar panels in a field behind the bakery in 2015. They power the ovens, lights, computers and heating and cooling, and Grandy says they offset over 145,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions a year.

  • Certified organic, all of it. Grandy's FAQ says everything it makes is certified organic by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, and that its products are non-GMO.
  • Gluten-free options with a real certification. Many products carry Gluten-Free Food Program (GFFP) certification, and the FAQ says every batch is tested to contain less than 5ppm of gluten. Look for the "Certified Gluten-Free" note on each product page, because not every recipe qualifies (Classic Granola, for example, isn't sold as gluten-free).
  • Simple sweeteners. Most recipes are sweetened with organic wildflower honey, pure organic maple syrup or organic coconut nectar. The newer Dark Chocolate Sea Salt granola uses a touch of Fair-Trade brown sugar.
  • Kosher on most lines. The FAQ says most products are OU certified Kosher, so check the product page before ordering.

What does that mean at your breakfast table? A bag you can read in five seconds, with ingredients you'd recognise from your own pantry.

Coconola or classic granola?

Coconola skips grains entirely. Original Coconola lists organic unsweetened coconut, coconut nectar, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pecans, sesame seeds and maple syrup, and it's certified gluten-free. It's richer and nuttier, so a little goes a long way on yogurt. Classic Granola is the comfort-cereal pick: oats, honey and seeds that soften slowly in milk. Buy Coconola if you snack straight from the bag. Buy Classic if you fill a cereal bowl every morning and want more cereal for your money.

The chocolate question

Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Granola combines organic cocoa, chocolate chips and sea salt over whole grain oats. Grandy's own serving idea: layer it with vanilla yogurt, peanut butter and banana slices. If you'd rather keep it grain-free, Dark Chocolate Coconola brings the chocolate to the coconut base instead. Buy the granola if you want crisp oat clusters; buy the Coconola if you're avoiding grains.

Going big with bulk bags

The 3lb and 5lb bags are where the math gets friendly. Original Coconola works out to about $1.11 an ounce in the 9oz bag and about $0.80 an ounce in the 5lb bulk bag. Worried about a giant bag going stale? Grandy says its products keep for 12 months in a cool, dry place with the zipper sealed, and it suggests storing Coconola in the freezer to keep the coconut flakes extra crunchy.
