Trade Coffee Review 2026: Can a 2-Minute Quiz Find Your Perfect Roaster?

Trade Coffee Review 2026: Can a 2-Minute Quiz Find Your Perfect Roaster?

The grinder whirs, the kettle clicks off, and the first bloom of a new coffee rises out of the filter: berries this week, maybe chocolate and caramel next week, from a small roaster in Savannah or Seattle you'd never have found on your own. No driving across town to a specialty café, no guessing in the supermarket aisle. That's the idea behind Trade Coffee: a subscription that matches you with independent roasters and sends their beans to your door.

We went through Trade's website and help center in October 2026: the quiz, the Discovery Trial, both price tiers, shipping, gift subscriptions and gear. Here's how it works, what it costs per bag, and how to start without overpaying.

The Story: Coffee Picked by Coffee People

Trade (the brand name of Seed Leaf Inc., based in New York) describes its mission as finding "the country's best small roasters." Its team, led by a Director of Coffee, is made up of baristas, former roasters, Q-graders and home brewers. Trade lists 500+ coffees in rotation, 1,000+ coffees tasted per year and 10 trained baristas on staff.

The roaster list reads like a road trip: Alma in Canton, Georgia; Sparrows in Grand Rapids; Broadcast in Seattle; Small Planes in Washington, D.C.; Sightglass in San Francisco; ReAnimator in Philadelphia, and many more. Trade frames it as a way to support independent roasters while drinking coffee that's roasted to order.

What Makes It Different: The Matching System

Plenty of subscriptions send you "a coffee." Trade's pitch is that it sends you your coffee. Here's the process the brand describes:

  • Cupped by Q Graders. Certified tasters evaluate every coffee.
  • Scored and logged. Acidity, body, roast level and flavor notes are recorded for every lot.
  • Matched to you. A roughly 2-minute quiz asks how you brew (espresso, coffee maker, pour-over, French press, cold brew, AeroPress, moka pot and more) and what you like, then matches coffees to your profile.
  • Roasted to order. Your roaster roasts on its own schedule, and Trade says the coffee ships within 24–48 hours of roasting via USPS Ground Advantage, typically 3–5 business days in transit.
  • "Love it or we'll replace it." If your first bag isn't quite right, Trade says it will send another one, free.

The result: you rate what arrives, the matches get sharper, and your shelf slowly fills with roasters you actually love.

Classic or Premium?

Classic covers 100+ approachable coffees, mostly medium and dark roasts and blends, the cup you'd happily drink every morning. Premium opens up 450+ coffees, including Trade's lightest roasts, most of its espressos, all of its decafs and more experimental processing. Buy Classic if you take milk and want reliable comfort. Buy Premium if you brew pour-over, chase fruity single origins, or need decaf. You can still buy any bag à la carte as a one-time purchase.

Standard bag or 2-lb bag?

Trade says most standard bags are about 310 grams (around 11 ounces). A 2-lb bag costs $39.99 (Classic) or $49.99 (Premium) and ships free in a pay-per-shipment subscription. Households with two daily coffee drinkers, or anyone making cold brew in batches, will burn through standard bags fast, so the big bag is the better value.

Frequency and control

You can schedule deliveries every 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 weeks, or every 10 days. Trade emails you 3–4 days before each order, and you can swap coffees, repeat a favorite or make changes up to two days before your order date. You can also pause or cancel.

Our Verdict

Trade turns "what coffee should I buy?" into a short quiz and a steady stream of beans from roasters you'd never find on a supermarket shelf. Start with the Discovery Trial to find your style, then switch to a prepaid bundle or 2-lb bags to keep the per-cup cost down. Check our Trade Coffee deals page before you sign up.
